Lee et al for their thought-provoking article on the parental attitudes toward very low birth weight infants who have been cared for in their neonatal intensive care unit.1 The authors recognize several limitations of their study: (a) small sample size; (b) exclusion of parents of infants who died in the neonatal intensive care unit; (c) exclusion of single parents. Despite recognizing these limitations, the authors conclude, "Our results indicate that more cognizance must be taken of parental desires in the discussion of whether active treatment should be offered to VLBW infants."
