Abstract
Breast implants made of silicone material have been used for three decades. It is estimated that by 1989 between 850 000 and 1 million women received these implants (60% for cosmetic reasons, 40% for reconstruction) (R.R. Cook, oral communication, 1994). There are no data on the incidence of breast-feeding in these women. Because of concerns about illnesses in women who have breast implants, especially connective-tissue disease (termed by some human adjuvant disease), in April 1992 the Food and Drug Administration declared that implants would be available only through controlled clinical trials. Questions have been raised about the health of the offspring of those women, especially those infant who are breast-fed.
