Abstract
Caveats are needed regarding the Academy of Pediatrics policy statement1 (in the September issue of Pediatrics) advising all women capable of becoming pregnant to take a daily over-the-counter multivitamin containing 0.4 mg of folic acid to reduce the frequency of neural tube defect (NTD) babies.
I provided similar advice in my 1992 paper, "Folate and Neural Tube Defects".2 However, in that paper I discussed important caveats. I repeated and extended those caveats at the August 12, 1993, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) meeting on monitoring the effects of folate supplementation.
