Abstract
An alternative to laryngoscopic endotracheal intubation of infants is direct "finger" intubation using no laryngoscope or visualization. In 1543, Vesalius1 described the placement of a tube into the trachea to control ventilation in what may be the first description of intubation without a laryngoscope. Over the centuries the technique has been described a number of times in the adult literature.2-4 In 1941, Russ and Strong5 described a method of digital intubation for neonatal resuscitation. Twenty-seven years later, Woody and Woody (6) again described and illustrated that technique. Now, however, 487 years after Vesalius' description, the method does not appear to have gained common acceptance in pediatrics.
