Abstract
To the Editor.—
I write to take strong exception with the recent article by Metzker and Shamir describing butterfly-shaped flat capillary hemangiomas occurring over the midline of the lumbar spine.1 The authors conclude that these lesions have not been described before, that they do not warrant further investigation, and that when seen in conjunction with a myelomeningocele that there was "no apparent relationship between the two entities."
Flat capillary hemangiomas occurring over the lumbar spine are one of the four long recognized cutaneous stigmata of occult spinal dysraphism.2-6
