Abstract
To the Editor.—
In the article by Gibson et al,1 the increasing numbers of cases of blinding retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) seen in infants weighing less than 1000 g (ELBW) is attributed to improved survival. For the ELBW infants, 1-year survival was 19% from 1970 through 1979 and 36% from 1980 through 1986. Interestingly, in Toledo we had a similar experience regarding survival. The ELBW neonatal survival was 23% in 1975 through 1979 and 62.5% in 1981.2
