Abstract
The commentary, "Between a "Rock" and a Hard Place: Perinatal Drug Abuse,"1 provides much food for thought. Particularly the statement referring to drug-dependent mothers, "In the past, society failed to offer this group of women the protection and nurturing that they needed—will we now penalize them further?", deserves further elaboration. Indeed, it is clear to many familiar with the "drug culture" that members of this pathologic society did not have complete control over their destiny.
