Abstract
In Reply.—
I have consistently emphasized1-3 that the changes in birthing practices that Klaus and Kennell helped bring about are laudable, and that the failure to demonstrate clear, enduring, universal, and clinically significant effects attributable to early contact should in no way justify a return to dehumanizing birthing practices. In this respect, I am entirely in agreement with Emde and Osofsky, as well as Klaus and Kennell.4.5 As Emde and Osofsky suggest, it is unfortunate that policy-relevant research and reviews of it lend themselves to misuse by those whose agenda is set regardless of the scientific evidence.
