Cutaneous Amebiasis

Brook has heightened the pediatrician's awareness of anaerobic etiologies of cutaneous abscesses, especially in the perineal area. He suggests that our patient may have had an anaerobic infection rather than cutaneous amebiasis, although our patient had an open ulcer rather than a closed abscess. In our patient, aerobic and anaerobic cultures of the genital lesions grew coagulase-negative staphylococci and diphtheroids. Viral cultures were sterile. Cultures of the genital ulcers, vagina, and rectum were negative for Neisseria gonorrhoea.
