Abstract
Although Chilton's desire to reduce prescription costs is admirable (Chilton L: Strategies for reducing prescription costs. Pediatrics 68:713, 1981), potential toxicity dictates that care must be taken in recommending large quantities or high concentrations. The decline in salicylism which resulted from limitations on the per-bottle quantities of baby aspirin is evidence of the health value in restricting quantities. Large bottles of medicine—no matter how well secured by the most vigilant of parents— represent a preventable health risk.
