Abstract
Cholesterol crystals, which appear as irregularly or regularly notched transparent plates, are sometimes seen in urine and indicate severe urinary tract infection or rupture of lymphatic vessels into the renal pelvis. They have also been observed in synovial fluid and indicate a severe form of arthritis.1 On a number of occasions, I have observed in urine crystals whose shape resembles that of cholesterol crystals. These were found in the urines of healthy newborns. The crystals were not soluble in organic solvents such as ether and acetone.
