Abstract
The article concerning the EPA's establishment of the air lead standard (Pediatrics 62:1070, 1978) deserves further comment. The importance of sources for lead poisoning other than paint has emerged in the past 10 years with studies incriminating the automobile, lead smelting industries, etc.1,2 The culmination of this data lies in the dirtfall theory, in which the final step in the pathway of lead absorption is the ingestion of contaminated dust and soil through hand-mouth activity, normal behavior for infants and toddlers.
