Abstract
The article by La Franchi et al. regarding transient neonatal hypothyroidism (Pediatrics 60:538, October 1977) raises an important question concerning the possible role of apparently small doses of iodine in causing this condition. In the case reported, the patient's mother received a daily supplement of 150 µg of iodine, which could be of some importance because it may result in iodine overload in the fetus. The only way to test this hypothesis would be to measure 24-hour urinary iodine excretion.
