Abstract

Dr. Lindenbaum raises a point whose answer all would agree upon, namely when pneumococci or meningococci have been identified as the etiologic agent of bacterial meningitis, penicillin G is the simplest, cheapest, specific antimicrobial therapy. However, it is worth noting that in a controlled study of bacterial meningitis due to these agents ampicillin was an equivalent, albeit more expensive, alternate.
