Abstract
Adult mice were fed similar quantities of either hexachlorophene or bithionol. Whereas hexachlorophene-treated animals developed cerebral edema characterized by spongiform changes in myelin sheaths, animals fed bithionol showed no adverse effects. It is suggested that bithionol be considered as a possible alternative to hexachlorophene because of its equally potent germicidal effect but apparent lack of neurotoxicity. Measures to protect against photosensitivity are advocated.
