Abstract
The field encompassed by the term "physician extenders," a better description of the contents of this book than "physician's assistant," is rapidly changing. Thus, any view of the field at one point in time is apt to be limited and even misleading. This little paperback paints the picture as it was in 1971. Its coverage of historical background and its extensive bibliography are useful. However, some of the peer group statements which it reproduces or quotes have been superseded, others soon will be.
