Abstract
A method for neurological assessment of gestational age was shown to be reliable on control infants. This method was then used to investigate the neurological development of 55 infants of diabetic mothers (IDMs) during the first week after birth. Neurological maturation in the IDM is shown to be consistent with gestational age. Many of the IDMs showed neurological abnormalities resulting from hypotonia, which in turn correlated well with previous hypoglycemia. The individual tests used in the examination were assessed for reliability.
