Abstract
The fable illustrated be1ow1 shows the manner in which children of the early nineteenth century were taught about right and wrong. There was always the same sharp contrast; laziness suffered prompt and severe punishment, and initiative was as promptly and decisively rewarded. Actual experience may have been sorely disappointing to the child who unequivocally accepted the lesson of this fable.2
