Abstract
The initial E.E.G.'s of 135 neonates with convulsions or suspected convulsions of multiple causes have been reviewed without knowledge of their clinical outcome. Seventy per cent of those with normal E.E.G.'s have developed normally. Sixty-four per cent of those with an abnormal E.E.G. subsequently either died or had significant neurological sequelae. In a number of cases it was not possible to place the E.E.G. in the normal or abnormal category and the reasons for this are discussed.
