Abstract
This study of 87 patients with isolated ventricular septal defects aims to extend and coordinate current knowledge of the pathophysiology of this anomaly. Unfortunately the study is confined to the course of the disease after the age of 2 years and important information on the natural history of the defect in the first year is entirely lacking except for references to data obtained by other investigators and case histories of patients in the author's series. Repeat cardiac catheterizations, when performed, were carried out primarily in the 5-9-year age group, a period of stability as suggested by previous authors.
