Abstract
The science of nutrition seemed to be well on the way to achieving its purposes when composition of major foodstuffs had been determined, identity of various vitamins established, and preliminary estimates of dietary requirements made. Application of this knowledge in the United States largely eradicated nutritional deficiency disorders, and a lull seemed to creep over the field of nutrition as old concepts and techniques became less fruitful in further advancement of nutritional science. Perhaps increasing restlessness with old concepts has been largely responsible for resurgence of the attack on the difficult task of measuring composition of the body in the intact living being.
