Please clarify whether the parents were hospitalized prior to the offspring's diagnosis of autism or after the diagnosis. If the hospitalizations due to mental disorders occurred primarily after the parents received the autism diagnosis in their offspring, might it not indicate that the stress and social isolation/rejection that parents received after such diagnosis could have manifested itself in such mental disturbances as depression, mood disorder, etc.? Mental disturbances can afterall be brought on by extraordinary stress, lack of emotional support and lack of sleep, such as is commonly experienced by parents caring for a child with autism, could it not?

In the article, "Parental Psychiatric Disorders Associated With Autism Spectrum Disorders in the Offspring", autism is called a developmental disorder defined by impaired social interaction, communication and behavior. This definition is useless and way outdated. In the real world, parents of autistic children define the following as symptoms in their child:

Chronic burning diarrhea and/or Constipation with grapefruit-sized blockage (verified by x-ray)

Intestinal diverticulitis

Seizures

75% under normal body weight/or overweight with no muscle tone

Lesions lining intestinal mucosa

Esophineal esophagitis

Sleep Disorders

Food texture sensitivity and swallowing difficulty

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder

Hyperactivity

Loss of skills

Allergies to foods, fabrics, toys

Immune dysfunction

Yeast overgrowth

Inability to sweat

Precocious puberty

Chronic sinus infections

Chronic upper respiratory infections

Thyroid malfunction

Mitochondrial disorders

Adrenal Gland disorder

Hypoperfusion in brain

Vascular Damage

Low Glutathione/ De-tox dysfunction

Anemia

Hypergammaglobulenmia Bone Density Problems

Ataxia Celiac/IBD Folate Metabolism

Were the parents in this study screened for these symptoms? How long can the medical community ignore the fact that these kids are very sick? The continued obfuscation of this issue by the main stream medical community, through articles like this, is not fooling anyone. It only feeds more parental anger.
