The article written by Minesh Khusoo and others is remarkable in that
for the first time increased morbidity has been shown to be caused by
coagulase negativen staph in neonates from a developed country. We have
seen a similar pattern of thrombocytopenia and increased morbidity and
mortality caused not only by coagulase negative Staph but also by gram
negative organisms causing persistent bacteremia in neonates. In our study
at Sherikashmir Institute of medical sciences India,26 neonates developed
septicemia because of coagulase negative staph over a period of two years
and persistent bacteremia and thrombocytopenia was seen in 17
patients(65%).Many of these organisms were methicillin resistant and were
treated with vancomycin. The increased incidence was in preterm vetilated
babies. Out of these 26 patients 3/26(11%) died and rest of the babies
were discharged. There was increased incidence of GI bleed,,delayed
initiation of feeds, feeding intolerance in these patients.Coagulase
negative staph causing thrombocytopenia and increased morbidity in our set
up is very common in neonates
