Assessment of the Long-term Safety of Inhaled Ciclesonide on Growth in Children With Asthma
Saul Malozowski, MD, PhD, MBARockville, MD 20852
To the Editor.—
Skoner et al1 reported that they have ascertained that ciclesonide, an inhaled glucocorticoid, does not affect growth in children with asthma. Unfortunately, they also failed to show any pulmonary function or asthma-control benefit of ciclesonide when compared with placebo. In the context of a futile efficacy outcome, to claim safety is overreaching. A claim that ciclesonide does not affect growth will necessitate a study at doses or in populations where salutatory pulmonary effects are also shown. This study provides a false sense of safety, and its conclusions should be disregarded.
