The annual Recommended Childhood Immunization Schedule of the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) is issued in January of each year.

Since publication of the 2000 Schedule, a major change has been made. The heptavalent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV) is recommended for all children 2 to 23 months of age and also is recommended for certain other children 24 to 59 months of age who are at high risk. More information about both PCV and the older polysaccharide pneumococcal vaccine can be obtained at the AAP Web site (http://www.aap.org), from Pediatrics,2,3 and from the ACIP.4 This report provides the year 2001 Schedule, reflecting this change. Some minor changes also have been placed in the footnotes to the Schedule.

During the year 2001, it is possible that new recommendations about these vaccines will be made and that other vaccine products will be approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Detailed recommendations for the use of new and current vaccines indicated for use during infancy, childhood, and adolescence are given in the 2000 Red Book,5 AAP (http://www.aap.org) and ACIP (http://www.cdc.gov/nip) statements on specific vaccines, and the respective manufacturers' package inserts.
