We recently became aware of an increase in the incidence of lamp
oil exposure in Europe and in the United States. Approximately 1100 cases were reported in Germany in 1994 with 3 deaths that occurred
after the study was complete.1 The Illinois Poison Center
reported 21 cases in 1997; 12 had no adverse affects, 6 were treated
and released from health care facilities, 2 were discharged with close
physician follow-up, and 1 was admitted.2 Also, an 8-year
