Can Drowning in Swimming Pools Be Prevented?

To the Editor.

I read with interest the article in the June 1998 issue of Pediatrics electronic pages entitled "Childhood Drownings and Fencing of Outdoor Pools in the United States, 1994."1 Based on telephone surveys of households throughout the United States, the authors concluded that even if all residential pools in the United States were properly fenced, most drownings among children <5 years of age would not be prevented. The authors' conclusions contrast sharply with those of our Arizona Child Fatality Review Team, which since 1994 has reviewed the deaths of every Arizona child <18 years of age.
