As an anesthesiologist, a pediatric intensive care physician, but most of all as a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), I read with great interest the article by Lowrie et al1 that appeared in the September 1998 issue of Pediatrics electronic pages. I certainly hope that the publication of this article represents an attempt by Pediatrics and the AAP to initiate a controversy and bring to light questionable and unsafe practices in the sedation of children, rather than an endorsement of an institutional practice that violates the standards established by the AAP,2 the American Society of Anesthesiologists,3 and many if not all state . . .
