Pertussis in Infancy Does Not Increase the Risk of Asthma

Asthma is caused by several hereditary and environmental factors. It was recently shown that respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) bronchiolitis during the first year of life increases the risk of asthma.1 Children with RSV bronchiolitis had a significantly higher incidence of asthma at 3 years of age than children matched for birth date, sex, and residency (11/47 versus 1/93). This leads to the question whether other serious respiratory infections also increase the risk of asthma.
