An American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) news release trumpeted misinformation to the world from the seriously flawed conclusions of an article in the February 1996 issue of Pediatrics. This press release and seemingly scientific article conclude that "Health care workers must work to remove barriers . . . so young patients who wish to avoid pregnancy will view Norplant as a contraceptive alternative." This is just plain bad advice. Why "work" for an objective that causes more problems? Although Norplant may protect a teen from pregnancy, it certainly does not protect a teen from acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS), which is 100% fatal, or any other sexually transmitted disease (SID).
