Why shouldn't a pediatric prenatal visit be recommended? After all, it initiates a relationship between the pediatrician and family, and from there, establishes a foundation for health education and anticipatory counseling so central to primary care. Serwint et al are to be commended for performing a much-needed study to determine if there is value in a prenatal pediatric visit. The relatively few published studies have largely been descriptive, survey data, or of a case-control design in which the focus has been narrow, eg, effect on breastfeeding only. By reporting on their randomized, controlled trial, Serwint and colleagues advance objective evidence on the effect of the prenatal pediatric visit to its next level.
