A team of Stanford University researchers suggests that some new standards may be in order for the nation's intensive care units, where an estimated $62 billion a year1% of the nation's gross domestic productis spent.
Researchers . . . studied the records of 402 patients admitted consecutively to Stanford University Hospital in 1989. Using state death records, they discovered that 17% of the group lived less than three months after discharge, yet this same group accounted for 34% of hospital charges.
