Dr Escobar rightly concludes that more research is needed concerning the performance of lumbar punctures (LPs) in neonates at risk for sepsis. He warns of accepting a blanket recommendation of performing LPs in all these infants. As the risks for long-term complications from the procedure are extraordinarily low, we wonder what "unfortunate events" he fears from such a recommendation.
In regard to the possibility that clinicians may not have recorded symptoms, we carefully reviewed the entire medical records, including both physicians' and nurses' notes.
