We are pleased with the interest in our recent publication. Concerning the seven asymptomatic infants whose lumbar punctures (LPs) were performed solely for maternal risk factors: They were deemed to be asymptomatic based on careful review of the written medical records, with particular attention to the nurses' and physicians' notes and assessments, as well as the vital signs.1 We sought to identify signs and symptoms that were apparent before the child's LP. Pediatricians and nurses did assessments in every case.
