We read the article by Dr Wiswell et al1 in the June 1995 issue of Pediatrics. We believe this article tells only one side of the story on lumbar puncture (LP) and suspected neonatal sepsis because the data on the number of LPs performed to identify these meningitis cases are not available. We reviewed articles published on this issue (LP in the first week of life to rule out sepsis) over the years in the English language peer-reviewed journals, which have given the number of cases of meningitis diagnosed versus the number of LPs performed.
