Lumbar Puncture in the Evaluation for Early Neonatal Sepsis

We have read with interest the article by Wiswell et al on the use of lumbar punctures (LPs) in the neonate suspected of sepsis (Pediatrics 1995;95:803-806). At the present time, we are in the process of drawing up guidelines on the management of infants born to mothers who are positive for group B streptococcus in pregnancy. In view of the extremely large numbers in your study, some of your findings are causing us some concern.
