Dr Joseph raises the interesting question whether children with mild cases of varicella are more likely to develop second cases of varicella in the future. I am not aware of studies correlating levels of varicella antibody with the severity of varicella. Baba et al did show that infants with low levels of transplacental antibody developed mild varicella and robust antibody responses. In a study of adults, Gershon et al demonstrated that a small proportion of adults with no history of varicella and with positive but low levels of antibody were still susceptible to varicella.
