The Internet is an electronic communications network that spans the globe, and is commonly used to disseminate information relevant to medicine. Many issues resulting from the use of the Internet for medical purposes have never required consideration before. For example, citations that refer to Internet sources (eg, References 3-5 below) have yet to be standardized by the American Medical Association or the British Medical Association.
The Internet list server devoted to topics in neonatology has been operational for more than 1 year. A useful analogy to a list server might be the editorial correspondence section of a journal. In the case of list servers, however, a message posted by an author to the list server is electronically and automatically mailed to all subscribers and is neither peer reviewed nor edited.
