Letters to the Editor

Allan L. Drash MD1

1 (For the) Work Group on Cow's Milk Protein and Diabetes Mellitus

The letters from Dr MacLean and Dr Elliott appear to challenge the analysis, conclusions, and recommendations of the Work Group on Cow's Milk Protein and Diabetes Mellitus.1

Both writers express concern about the evidence possibly linking soybean products and diabetes in animals. Only one sentence of our literature review relates to this issue:

"Several investigators have been unable to replicate the early findings consistently (referring to cow's milk protein) and have in some cases identified evidence that a small number of plant proteins, most notably soy, may also trigger diabetes in susceptible animal strains."
