Two superb discussions of managed care were recently published in Pediatrics. The first was a commentary entitled, "Medicaid Managed Care: Can It Work for Children?" (1995;95:591-594). The second was "Guiding Principles for Managed Care Arrangements for the Health Care of Infants, Children, Adolescents, and Young Adults" by the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) Committee on Child Health Financing (1995;95:613-615). Both of these pieces make excellent points about protecting pediatric continuity of care and addressing the scope of health care needs of children entering managed care programs, whether under the auspices of state-mandated Medicaid managed care plans or the private sector.
