Consensual Sexual Intercourse

Joyce A. Adams MD1

1 Valley Medical Center, Department of Pediatrics, Fresno, CA 93702-2998

The article by Resnick and Blum1 in the December 1994 issue of Pediatrics disturbed me greatly. The authors contend that adolescents who report having had sexual intercourse at or before the age of 10 years, but did not indicate that they had been sexually abused, must have had consensual intercourse. The data was obtained from the Minnesota Adolescent Health Survey, which was completed by 9th through 12th grade students during the 1986 through 1987 school year.
