Letters to the Editor

George A. Little MD1 and John G. Brooks MD1

1 Department of Pediatrics, Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center, Lebanon, NH 03756-0001

We thank Drs DiMaio and Southall for drawing our attention to their publications; they and their associates obviously accept the unthinkable.1 We are quite sure that not everyone does as readily; murder is not a nice thought.

Dr DiMaio's letter2 was followed with a reply by Dr Kelly.3 Both refer to the 1978 paper by Steinschneider,4 but with different emphasis. The first, speaking from the perspective of a forensic pathologist, concluded that infanticide was the most likely cause of death.
