We thank Dr Tankersley for his comments and offer the following answers:

1. Dr Tankersley rightly points out the mistake in Table 4. Seventy -seven percent of boys in 1987 and 87% of boys in 1990 answered the question: "have you ever used a condom?" The 22% of boys in 1987 and the 34% of boys in 1990 who said they have used a condom on a regular basis are thus included in these figures.
