The Committee on Drugs' revised statement on drugs and chemicals in breast milk1 will undoubtedly be widely used as an authoritative source of information for counseling nursing mothers. However, it has some noteworthy shortcomings:
Discussion of the effects of drugs on lactation is inadequate. For example, combination oral contraceptives (none of which contain progesterone as is stated) are accompanied by the somewhat misleading comment, "... decrease in milk production and protein content (not confirmed in several studies)."
