DATA DREDGING TURNS UP ANOTHER SPURIOUS ASSOCIATION

Data from a large U.S. risk factor study (MRFIT) throw up a [biologically implausible] relation between cigarette smoking and suicide. . . It is likely that many more associations, for other exposures and other diseases, are equally spurious, but are protected by their lack of obvious implausibility.
