LIFETIME COST OF TREATING AIDS PATIENTS GOING DOWN

The estimated cost of treating a person with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) from the time of infection until death is $119,000, but the cost is declining, according to a new study by the Agency for Health Care Policy and Research. Study author Fred J. Hellinger, Ph.D., director of AHCPR's Division of Cost and Financing, Center for General Health Services Extramural Research, used data from the AIDS Cost and Service Utilization Survey (ACSUS) to estimate the monthly cost of treatment for persons in various disease stages ...

The study projects that the average survival time of a person with AIDS (PWA) diagnosed in 1993 would be 25 months.
