Prevalence of Cerebral Palsy: Estimations, Calculations and Neonatal Care

Augusto Sola MD1 and Robert E. Piecuch MD2

1 Neonatal Clinical Services, University of California, San Francisco

Dr Bhushan et al1 published a very interesting article in the June issue of Pediatrics which should be helpful in planning for health care delivery to patients with cerebral palsy. We have performed further analysis on the estimations and calculations they reported and would like to make some comments and add some results with a somewhat different perspective.

Prevalence has been classically defined as the "percent of a population being studied that is affected with a particular disease at a given time"2 or as "the ratio between the number of people who have the disease at one point in time with the number of people at risk at that time."3
