Bike Dangers

To the Editor.—

The excellent article, "The Bicycle: A Developmental Toy versus a Vehicle"1 is a much-needed look at the causes of, and misconceptions concerning, bicycle accidents. However, one statement requires comment.

The authors say, "Environmental modifications such as bicycle lanes [and] separating bicyclists from traffic...are proven injury reduction measures..."1,p755 Not! Although that statement may seem so obviously true that there would be little need to justify it, it is in fact a dangerous mistake.
