The New National Institutes of Health Strategic Plan

FREDERICK C. BATTAGLIA MD1

1 University of Colorado Health Sciences Center, Denver

I have just received the final version of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) strategic plan. There was a considerable delay between the last of the regional conferences and the completion of the strategic plan. The regional conferences provided an opportunity for NIH staff and a wide variety of biologic scientists to meet and discuss aspects of NIH planning. The process almost inevitably left most of us hankering for more in-depth discussion of individual topics. At the regional planning sessions, the topics were discussed in concurrent sessions whereas many of the scientists attending would have preferred input in several of the sessions addressing closely related topics.
