Is Ear Pulling Associated With Ear Infection?

To the Editor.—

I have been impressed over the years by the number of children who were brought to the office by their parents because of a sole complaint of ear pulling. These children had no other symptoms, and their parents were clearly concerned about the possibility of otitis media. I decided to perform a small study within my practice of those children brought in with a chief complaint of ear pulling and to evaluate them for other signs of illness as well as otitis media.
